This is a soft pastel painting class for those of you who have some experience with this wonderful medium, and those of you who have experience with drawing animals in Colored Pencil. This class will introduce you to using soft pastel pencils with your soft pastels; to create animal and pet portraits; how to depict fur and feathers. Each class will start with some information on pastel painting including: how to make different marks: linear or side strokes; ways to blend colors on the paper; and underpainting techniques. Pastels are very versatile and it is easy to create simple or complex paintings. We will concentrate on drawing different animals in this class and we will draw from photos.

What to bring: PITT Pastel Pencils, 24 or 36 piece set (or another brand if you prefer), Art Spectrum Colourfix Coated Pastel Paper (warm tone pack 9″ X 12″, or 10 sheets of white), drawing board to tape work to: it can be a full sheet of foam core cut in half and taped on 3 sides (very lightweight and you can carry your work home inside – get at the Dollar Store), rags, paper stumps, tortillons, and an old stiff artist paintbrush (1/2″ wide) for blending, masking tape 3/4″ wide, newspapers for under your artwork, container for water, wax paper. Bring whatever soft pastels you own, pastel pencil sharpener (or makeup pencil sharpeners), color shapers or blenders.

Do NOT buy “Oil” pastels by mistake. You may want to wear clothing you do not mind getting dirty.
Class limited to 4, minimum 2 students.

Class starts: Monday, January 30th, 2017, and runs for 8 weeks, 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Cost is $150.00. 10% of each tuition is donated to the SAA Art Scholarship Fund.
