This class of 8 consecutive weeks will take you from the photograph to the finished painting. Sessions will run consecutively. Refer to our gallery and on our MeetUp Site at: “Seacoast Art Connection" or contact instructor.

We will study the elements of composition, do thumbnail sketches, and then value studies in black and white. We will do both small and large color and glazing charts, and mix both analogous and complimentary colors, as we learn about color relationships. Our small color studies will be accomplished. Transferring the image in various ways onto your larger canvas, will be demonstrated. You will then work to complete your painting. We will be painting from photos and setups of still life arrangements, and progressing to the landscape-with increasing skill levels-in further sessions. We will not be doing Portraiture.

We will discuss photographing your work in various stages as well as framing it. You will learn: watching demonstrations of Art Demos on DVDs and from teacher’s demos, listening to critiques, from exercises to “stretch” your learning, and from multiple handouts gleaned from the teachings of the “Masters” who came before us and the "Masters" of the present day who lead us now. You will be introduced to the best art books and we will have discussions on the best art blogs to read.

This is a class that combines both the “Alla Prima “(Direct Painting Technique) for color studies, and the “Layering and Glazing”  (Indirect Technique), whereby you will be transferring the image directly, doing a gray scale painted study, then doing a brown under painting or “Grisaille”. You will then finish your painting through the process of the “glazing” of transparent layers of color, and the “scumbling” of opaque passages of color.

There will be a required basic color palette and materials list. Fee is $160.00 for 8 weeks. There is an extra $40.00 fee for the use of my materials for the entire 8 weeks, if you chose not to purchase your supplies.LIMIT IS 6. *Appropriate for Beginner and Intermediate Painters.  Beginning students may want to sign up the weekly Wednesday night Drop-In Classes and be introduced to this medium and use my materials for an extra fee of $5.00. Please contact me first online or call me @(603)828-6585.

NEW!! Monday Morning "Beginner's Oil" Class. Check for session dates on our Meetup site: "The Seacoast Art Connection", at the SAA Gallery or contact the Instructor below. This class is a prepaid session of five consecutive classes that will bring the new oil painter from learning to use their materials, to planning a simple composition using sketches and color studies, and then painting their first painting in oils on a small 8"x10" canvas or panel. We will be painting in the "Alla Prima" or Direct approach to painting.
There will be: handouts, teacher demos, fun Art DVD's to watch, and simple exercises in composition and color mixing. You will learn to use various "supports" and techniques, and there will be essential student critiques. This class welcomes new people each session and will build upon the previous session for returning students. Students, who have some experience painting in oils, will find new materials, techniques and theories, as well. Photographing your work and framing it, will also be discussed. We will read the best Art "blogs" and the best art books will be available to read. This is a more relaxed class.
One makeup class per session is allowed on a Wednesday night drop-in class. Classes on Mondays will not be held the day of the gallery quarterly hanging of new art every few months and will be announced.
I will run this class for as few as two students. Six is the limit.  Please send a check for $90.00 for each 5 week session one week in advance of the start of each session, or contact me. I have the "Square Up" application to accept charges, as well, in class.
I will be providing you with some materials including: Gamsol in a small plastic container to keep, Arches Oil Paper for value studies and color mixing, and a small linen panel for a simple color and glazing chart. Fun handouts on art theories, tips and techniques, and blogs will also be included. If you choose to "Try it" before you buy any supplies for the entire session, there will be an extra charge of  $25.00. Send a check to: Pat E. Nickerson, The Seacoast Art Association, 225 Water Street, Exeter, NH 03833.
Please email me for a suggested list of your class materials, which are very minimal.  NOTE: We do not use Turpentine, or Turpenoid in the Gallery, just Gamblin's Gamsol, which is completely odorless. This class is not appropriate for Egg Tempera, Impasto (thick paint application), Palette Knife painting, or for Abstract painters. We will be working within a "Realist" approach to painting with the use of thin applications of paint.
If you want to try oils before you commit to a class session, consider my December or January "Try It In Oils" workshop on this website, whereby you will be using all of my materials for one night or the popular weekly WEDNESDAY Beginner's Oil Class which is a drop-in class, with a fee of $5.00 for the use of my materials.
10% of all my class fees will be donated to the SAA Student Scholarship Fund. Pat E. Nickerson is a Gallery Member of the Seacoast Art Association, and exhibits in other galleries, as well. See her bio and online gallery on: http://www.seacoastartist.org

We will be using the sky and clouds as our subject matter for this pastel class. This is a soft pastel painting class for those of you who have never tried this wonderful medium, and those of you who tired it years ago and would like a refresher course on the basics. This class will introduce you to pastels and you will see how quickly your painting takes shape and how brilliant the effects are of these pure colors. Each class will start with some information on pastel painting including: how to make different marks; several ways to blend colors on the paper;  how do an under painting with several mediums. Pastels are very versatile and we will experiment drawing flowers in this class. I will do a short demo at the beginning of each class.

Class starts: Tuesday, February 3, 2015, and runs for 5 weeks, 10:30am to 1:30pm with a short break. Cost is $140.00. 10% of each tuition is donated to the SAA Art Scholarship Fund.

What to bring: Sennilier Half-Stick Soft Pastels set of 40 assorted half-sticks, Prismacolor NuPastel set of 12, Art Spectrum Colourfix Coated Pastel Paper (cool tone pack 9” X 12”), vine charcoal (soft), drawing board (this can be a sheet of foamcore cut in half and taped on 3 sides), kneaded erasers, roll of paper towels or rags, paper stumps and an old stiff artist paintbrush (1" wide) for blending, 3/4” wide masking tape. I have set up a Wish List on www.DickBlick.com with the recommended supplies, but you may substitute these with soft pastels of your choice. Once you sign up for the class I will email you the link to this Wishlist. Do NOT buy “Oil” pastels by mistake. We will not be using them in class. You may want to wear clothing you do not mind getting dirty.
