Peter Gumaskas Gallery

Using a large format film camera to create my images is an antiquated process that’s inefficient, difficult, and deliberate. The inherent difficulty is something that I crave, in my work and in my life. I find it meditative. The camera slows me down, forces me to take the time to observe and reflect on what is before me. For that moment, that is my world.

I search for compositions based on shape, form, light, and shadow within the natural and man altered landscape. My images are devoid of color to put emphasis on these factors that force the viewer to see the world as I see it. My depictions of the natural world favor simpler examinations. Shying away from the traditional grand vistas that are typically seen in landscape photography. I have a passion for untouched open expanses, old worn out forgotten places and architecture. My goal is to show people that there is beauty in the quiet places, the lonely places, the overlooked places.
