Emily Scally is a recent graduate from Montserrat College of Art and practices large scale abstract expressionist work. With a BFA in painting and in art history, she uses her background to propel new ideas and research for her work. Her inspiration and research comes from Joan Snyder, Joan Mitchell, Yayoi Kusama and other abstract artists alike. Their use of form, color and shape share similarities to Scally’s work. Her paintings consist of large scale, hand stretched canvases that use color and form to shape her compositions. She uses large brush strokes and marks to create movement within her paintings, allowing for texture to be applied naturally.
“Recently my work has taken to drawing from life struggle and maturity while incorporating the understanding of the human experience. Using color and form to express emotion and create a sense of depth are my favorite aspects about composing a new painting. I aim to work with spontaneous movement while laying down intentful color and placement decisions. The combination of color, form, and spontaneous mark making are key themes of my paintings. These themes allow me to continue to show a raw relationship between myself and my work.”
